January 30, 2002
Sketching the landscape I woke up to just a faint dusting of snow. Earlier this season I photographed when so much snow was plastered to the trees that their outlines were like faint lines of black on a white background. (Take a look at the photo that accompanies the dispatch for January 14, 2002 .) Today is almost like a photographic negative of that day. The whites and blacks have switched roles. When I look across the landscape today it is dominated by dark colors outlined in white. The tone of the scenes are different, but in both cases it is like Nature got out her sketch pad and highlighted the landscape. She just conveyed a different mood each time. |
